We launched the first biodegradable paperboard spoon on the market.

The Biohz® spoon degrades in 12 to 18 months, while plastic spoons take more than 400 years. In response to increasingly pressing environmental challenges and new consumer needs, we challenged ourselves to think differently—breaking our paradigms by developing attractive value propositions for different markets, leveraging our capabilities, experience, and economies of scale. We created the Biohz line inspired by biodiversity, evolution, and environmental care. Under this product-line brand, we focus on developing and manufacturing innovative, functional, disruptive, recyclable, environmentally friendly products at competitive prices. The Biohz spoon is biodegradable and suitable for direct contact with all types of foods and temperatures. Its structure is durable, it contains no bleaching agents, and it features anti-moisture and grease-resistant treatment. The Biohz spoon has a novel design, unlike any paperboard spoon worldwide: it has an ergonomic handle and is comfortable, smooth, and long-lasting. Development process This development was a joint regional project among the companies in the HZ Interpack Group’s packaging unit, together with Celomat, Selecta, and Innovapack. In addition, work was carried out on the development of machinery that automatically forms and glues the spoon, optimizing production costs and enabling mass manufacturing and commercialization. Both products are currently undergoing the international patent application process, and the design is protected as an industrial design. “Several designs were tested until we arrived at the ideal one. A key point was ensuring the spoon is ready to use, requires no assembly, and does not change consumer habits. We understand the cultural barriers and the effort that changing a consumption habit can involve. We sought the optimal design to go to market with a spoon proposal that is easily accepted,” says James, Regional Innovation and Development Lead. Sustainability Single-use disposable plastics are one of the global challenges to be addressed. In the case of disposable plastic cutlery, they are used for an average of 20 minutes and take about 400 years to degrade. “We must start replacing these items now, and the spoon is the first of several more products that will be added to the Biohz line,” states Pablo Garcia, Regional Sales Manager.

New value proposition for the foodservice market

Pablo Garcia – Regional Sales Manager, tells us about the initiative to enter the foodservice market. Changes in the market that create opportunities The year 2020 was difficult for everyone, and especially for the foodservice industry. Lockdown directly affected the economy and everyone who is part of the industry’s supply chain. We had to adapt to a new reality, where consumers changed their consumption habits, driving, among other things, the growth of delivery and takeout. On the other hand, certain global trends that had already been emerging for some years became firmly established. Consumers are increasingly aware of environmental impact, and food safety became one of the main concerns. Today’s market requires sustainable products and certified plants. At Interpack, we understood that it was timely to offer products that meet these needs, developing sales channels different from those we traditionally supply. We have extensive experience providing packaging solutions and supporting the development work of leading fast-food companies. Our plant is certified to produce food-contact packaging through FSSC 222000 certification, the world’s leading certification scheme for food safety management systems. We develop packaging that not only protects the product, but also our planet. That is what we achieve with sustainable packaging: using recycled materials that promote the circular economy, simplifying structures, and encouraging eco-design. The future of sustainability is in our hands, and every choice counts. New alternatives In recent years, varnishes, inks, and raw materials have been developed that are not only suitable for food contact, but also have grease- and moisture-resistant properties, thus avoiding the use of plastic materials. These raw materials allow us to develop disposable paperboard products that are recyclable and biodegradable. Value Proposition We currently offer a wide range of foodservice products and are planning major launches in the coming months, based on innovation, sustainability, and attractive pricing enabled by our production capacity. We believe the foodservice market needs renewal, with functional, biodegradable packaging that connects with consumers. Our goal is to add value across the chain and make available products that are in line with the times. We are confident this will be the case, as we have the capacity, experience, and strength to achieve it.
